Q: I am looking for information on Paul Keating’s speech ” Funeral service for the unknown soldier”. I would like to know
- CONTEXT
- PURPOSE
- THEMES:
- TECHNIQUES:
- EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SPEECH
A: I’m giving you the link to the Speeches page on www.e-rudite.net which you’ve probably seen:
http://www.e-rudite.net/speeches.htm
The links cover the context of the speech and the blogs are Sydney Morning Herald and the ABC. Comments give a reception to the speech. One link indocates the text of the speech has permanency of display. This is an online resource so the references are from what’s in cyberspace. I am selective about the links I put up: reputable, syllabus relevant, as ad free as I can find.
I hope it’s all useful and thanks for using the site. There is also a blog which has information derived from the questions kids ask us: http://eruditehsc.wordpress.com/
From memory we have little on Speeches at this point in time.
that wasn’t very helpful sorry, i still can’t find themes or techniques. what is your personal response to this speech?
I’m sorry about that but you have the opportunity to ask questions. Our aim is to help you find the answers you need but we don’t do it for you.
Hi Brett,
I’m glad you decided to try again. Keating’s speech is about national pride revolving around a ceremony for the ‘unknown soldier’. HSC Online had a good section on the features of rhetoric which may be put up again.
The website that feeds the blog has some back ground on the speech: http://www.e-rudite.net/speeches.htm.
I will email a copy of some notes to you,
Judy
im stuck on this big time need help
Jake, I need to know what you’re stucjk on before I can help you: information? a question etc
Hi,
I’m writing an essay on this speech- linking it with Pearson’s “An Aus History for all of us”….i need to explore similar ideas/themes…i;ve already got unity…for Pearson i’m writing also abt “free speech”…however, “free speech” is an idea which doesnt strongly link to Keating’s speech..so i’m deciding to explore CONTRASTING ideas…wat other theme/idea can i talk abt in Keating’s speech which i can link to his allusion to the ANZAC legend??…is “national identity” a strong idea??
Both speeches are about being Australian but there are also distinctions. Keating is referring to all Australians, aboriginal and white. He is talking about qualities of ordinary Australians that are represented by the Unknown Soldier. Pearson is an advocate for aboriginal rights are is therefore focussed on a section of the Australian population. He is critical of the attitudes of sections of the white population. So what you have is two ways of looking at what it is to be Australian, both by Australians: one representing the nation and the other, a people.
I think a good essay looks for what is in common but also considers the differences. Start with the unity and move onto the differences that exist through context.
Hope that helps.
I would say so..!! Particularly if you as the new contemporary audience are Australian, you can identify with this/makes it more relevant/resounding etc.
Free speech links in with national identity though, Aussies are very adamant about speaking up for what we believe in… I don’t know if you want to pursue that link..
You could always go the ‘Australian’/national identity thing as a holistic view/connecting view for all of your speeches.. although I don’t know how many you’ve chosen to be part of your response.
‘So what you have is two ways of looking at what it is to be Australian, both by Australians: one representing the nation and the other, a people.’ seems like a great way to go.
Hope this helps
